Here are the rules I run by when mining:
1) If I don’t find any rocks that can have a core within 10-15 minutes, I reset
2) If I find 5-10 rocks in a row that can have cores but don’t, I reset
3) If I find 5-10 rocks that can have cores but only 1-2 have had a core, I reset

If you want to filter the galaxy map (temporarily) to show scoopable stars (KGBFOAM) you can follow this image to do so. At the bottom of the list is also a “Apply filter to route”.
